Adopt A Pet---If You Can

On my honeymoon five years ago, we went to a riding stable bed and breakfast. My husband Bud wasn’t familiar with horses, but we planned in buying two as we started our life together. It was at that bed and breakfast in the Poconos that I met the man I fell in love with! His name is Dakota. He is a beautiful bay Morgan. He was there and for sale.

Several months later I purchased Max, a Tennessee Walking Horse, for my husband. He’s a retired circus horse, they tell me. My husband didn’t take much of an interest in the horses, though. So I alternate which one I ride.

Around the time I bought Dakota, my husband came home with some kind of a mixed breed dog from the SPCA. Pepper wasn’t friendly and couldn’t be around the other dogs. In fact, only one girl there could walk him.

While Pepper, along with Max & Dakota, stole my heart, he remains Bud’s best friend.

In the mid 90’s I was on vacation with my grandmother and aunt at Cayuga Lake. It’s one of the Finger Lakes in New York State. I was sitting in front of our cottage looking at the lake when I heard a meow. Behind me was a gorgeous grey tiger cat. Of course, Cayuga, as I named her, came home with me. She stayed with me for 11 years, til she passed.

Around the time Cayuga adopted me, one of our local SPCAs gave me a kitten to ‘thank’ me for the work I’ve done for them. That was twelve years ago, and Patches is still with me.

So when I fill out Christmas cards, they are signed Kim, Bud, Dakota, Max, Pepper, and Patches. My pets are truly blessings in my life. While they all act like they are never fed or never get attention, you know what I mean, they are a joy to me and I spoil them rotten.

If you are in a situation to give a homeless pet some love, please don’t pass up this opportunity. Even if you can’t adopt a pet, the local shelters are always looking for volunteers and donations. For Christmas every year, Bud & I usually buy dog and cat food to take to the shelter where we got Pepper. We are just so grateful to have him and our other pets in our lives today.
