Senior Self Protection

We are going to focus on just one aspect of safety:

When you are out shopping, consider the following suggestions. While nothing can prevent bad things from happening, these tips may help.

I just heard on the news, once again, about a purse snatcher targeting the older population. I like to keep my money in my front pants pocket. My shirt or coat will cover the pocket. This prevents would-be snatchers from sneaking into my money. This is great for gentlemen who generally keep their wallet in the back pocket, where they may not be able to stop someone from grabbing their wallet. They probably won’t even know they were robbed!

Ladies, if you must carry a purse, use good judgment. Make sure the strap is long so that you can drape it over your shoulder. Keep the purse under your arm and zipped closed.

If someone takes your purse, they probably took you off guard. You most likely will not be able to identify the thief if you would have that opportunity.

Don’t carry too many packages. This makes you an easy target for a would-be assault. You are not able to do anything to stop the situation. Make several trips to your car if need be.

In fact, trying to do too much shopping in one day may be exhausting. You may just want to do your shopping in several days. This way you will have more ability to protect yourself and you will be more alert to possible dangers.

Don't take more cash than you need. Remember when you use a credit card to be discreet. Camera phones make it pretty easy for criminals to get our personal information. Leave your social security card in a safe place at home. Don't risk identity theft.

If you can avoid shopping alone, take a friend or relative. You may want to avoid shopping at night as well.

If you use an assisted device, don't trade that in for carrying packages. Use your device as recommended by your physician. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and sturdy. Pay attention so that you don't trip over a curb, uneven flooring, or something left in the aisle.

While there are a lot of things to be aware of when you are shopping, if you keep these things in mind, you can relax and enjoy the holiday experience. A great attitude is the biggest form of self protection that I've found. You have so much to be grateful for this holiday season. Please enjoy all that it has to offer!
