Silver Leadership Hazleton

The Silver Leadership Hazleton program has been in existence since 1998. It is a compact model of the Leadership Hazleton program, that has the class meeting for 5 weeks for a half day session beginning Tuesday, September 30th and closing with a class graduation on Tuesday, November 11. Class members learn about different aspects of the community and how they affect life in the Greater Hazleton Area.

The first session each year deals with industrial and economic development and includes a tour of Humboldt Industrial Park and a presentation by a CANDO representative.

The second session, which is a combined session with our Leadership Hazleton participants, is called Past, Present and Predictions. This day includes area history, an overview of the current status of the Greater Hazleton Area and an enjoyable segment of predictions for the area made by class teams.

Health Issues, our third session, takes a look at a variety of health topics important to Seniors and their well being.

Senior Safety is a new topic this year and will highlight Kim Noel, Spectrum Senior Consultants, Inc. and safety tips in public, the vehicle, the home and as well as some practical protection techniques.

The last session will highlight Local Government and the various levels of government that a senior citizen should know about.

The class graduates in November with a special luncheon and a presentation of a certificate for them for completing the program.

Their experience with Silver however is not over then.We invite all alumni to get together for the holidays for a luncheon. The conversations have been very entertaining, but also very informative for the participants. They are able to discuss many issues that affect their age group and discuss their concerns with the other alumni.

The Silver graduates also help the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce with their annual Pennsylvania Cleanup. They could also be contacted to help with other community volunteer activities if they are interested.

There is no charge for participation. The following local businesses have generously agreed to provide progam sponsorship: LaserLight Engravers, Integral Investment Group-Joe Dougherty/Walter Iffert, Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, Greater Hazleton Senior Services, Inc. Center, St. Luke Village, Geisinger Health System and Motor Transportation Co., Inc. Each participant is responsible for his/her own transportation to and from the sessions.

This program is the only one of its kind in the Hazleton area. It is a great way for the retired and semi-retired residents of our area to become active in the community. Each year we have participants of different ages, with different backgrounds. We have had participants who have lived and worked their whole lives in the area and we have had several others who have lived here, moved away and are now returning to the area to retire and are very interested in learning what and who make things happen.

Applications are available by calling Pat Korb, 455-1509 and must be completed and returned no later than Monday, September 15.

You can also stop in at the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, Citiscape-20 West Broad Street and pick one up or email leadership@hazletonchamber.org
